NOOR JEHAN

Noor Jehan, because of her sweet singing style and melodious voice was given the honorific title 'Maliika -e- Tarammum'.The meaning of this Urdu title is 'Melody Queen'.No doubt she was the melody queen of South Asia who sang more than 10000 songs in languages like Hindi,Urdu.Punjabi,Sindhi etc.She was the first woman Film Director of Pakistan and acted in several films also in Pre-Partition India and Pakistan.
She was born as 'Allah Wasai' in Kasur, Punjab in a family of Musicians on Sept 21, 1926.She was interested in music as well as acting from the childhood.She acted as Baby Noor Jehan in films like 'Missar Ka Sitara'(1936), 'Heer Sayyal'(37).She recorded her first song for the super hit film 'Gul Bakavli' of 1939  which was produced by Pancholi Art Pictures.
As an adult her first appearance was in the film 'Khandan'(1942) in which Noor Jehan and Ghulam Mohd paired.




She came to Bombay to act in 'Duhai' which was directed by Maganlal Vyas and V.Kumar.It was followed by 'Naukar' directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi.
Then came hits like 'Nadan,Dost, and Lal Haveli'.
In 1945 she played the lead role alongside Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle in the movie 'Badi Maa'.It was the only film in which they acted together.
In 1945 'Zeenat' was a hit film directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi in which Yakub and Karan Dewan acted.She sang for this film the first ever Qawali recorded in female voices in South Asian Films with Kalyani Mitra and Sohrabai Ambala and the music was by Meer Sahab.It was the highest grossing film of that year.
In 1946 Mehboob Khan's 'Anmol Ghadi' was a super hit film in which Surendra and Suraiya acted along with her and the music was handled by Naushad.
Noor Jehan acted opposite Dilip Kumar in 'Jugnu' when Dilip Kumar was only 24 years old.That film was produced by Noor Jehan and her husband 'Shaukat Hussain Rizvi'.It was released in 1947 and became a big hit.Shashikala and Sulochana(Ruby Mayers) also acted in it along with Noor Jehan.
She finished her film 'Mirza Sahebaan' in 1947-48 and moved to Pakistan  and settled there with her husband.
Noor Jehan sang 127 songs in India and acted in 69 films and in 12 silent films also during the period 1932-47.
She died on December 23, 2000 in Karachi,Pakistan.

ABHI BHATTACHARYA

Abhi Battacharya was a famous actor of Hindi and Bengali cinema and was very active during 50's and 60's.He was born in 1921.
He acted in several mythological  films out of which his roles as Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna were mostly appreciated and loved by the audience.
Abhi Bhattacharya also acted in many social theme films and films like 'Yatrik'(52),Jagriti(54),Anuradha(60), and Subarnarekha(65) needs special mention and are still remembered.
He worked with noted directors like 'Guru Dutt,Satyan Bose,Bimal Roy'etc.
He started with Bombay Talkies and the first film was 'Naukadubi' in 1947 which was based on a novel by Rabindranath Tagore.It was directed by Nitin Bose.
He played Lord Vishnu in films like 'Tulsi Vivah,Vishnu Puran,Hari Darshan,Kisan aur Bhagwan'  and played Lord Krishna in Mahabharat.
In 1955 he acted in title role in the film 'Jagatguru Shankaracharya'.Sulochana Chatterjee was the female lead.
Guru Dutt was the director of 'Sailab' in 1956.He acted in supporting role.
He played negative roles in film 'Memsaab' in which Vinod Khanna and Yogita Bali acted in main roles.He handled negative role in Dharmendra film 'Ishq Par Zor Nahin'.
He was inclined to spirituality by his association  with Amia Roy Choudhary.He wrote a book narrating his experiences with Amia Roy Choudhary titled 'Destiny with Dadaji".
He received Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in 1956 for 'Jagriti'.Satyan Bose was the director of this film.
Abi Bhattacharya died in  1993 at Bombay.

SURESH

Suresh was a popular Bollywood actor during 40's 50's and 60's  who acted in lead roles and in supporting roles of many hit films.He acted opposite all well known heroines of those period including 'Suraiya,Nigar Sultana,Vyjayanthimala,Madhubala,Geetabali,Padmini' etc.
Suresh was his screen name and his original name was 'Nasim Amad'.He was born on 13 October 1929 at Gurdaspur in Punjab.
He started as a child artist at Bombay Talkies and acted in films like 'Naya Sansar,(41),Anjaan(41),Basant(42).
As a leading actor he became a favourite for the director/producer A.R.Kardar and the audience by acting in the film 'Dulari'(1949).
Suresh,Madhubala,Geetabali,Shyam Kumar,Jayant,Pratima Devi etc were the cast of this film which was a hit movie.The song 'mil mil ke gayenge do dil yahan' was very popular.
The director/producer A.R.Kardar cast him again in hit movies like 'Jadoo'(51),
Deewana(52), and 'Yasmin(55).
In the film 'Dastan' Suraiya acted as the heroine 'Indira' while Raj Kapoor,Suresh and Al Nasir acted in pivotal roles seeking her love.
In the film 'Deewana' Suraiya was his heroine and in 'Jadoo' Nalini Jayant acted opposite him.
Shyama acted as the female lead and Suresh was the hero of 'Char Chand'(53).
Suresh and Nigar Sultana were the leading pair of 'Rishta'(54) and Suresh and Usha Kiran acted as hero and heroine of 'Dost'.
Suresh and Vyjayantimala were the leading pair of the super hit film 'Yasmin(55).Jayant acted as a powerful princely Sheikh of 18th century Persia and Suresh acted as his son Ahmed who loved a beautiful girl by name 'Yasmin'.(Vyjayantimala).Abdul Rashid Kardar was the producer and director.
In the film 'Qaidi'(57) padmini was his heroine and Ragini also acted in this film.Johnny Walker,Helen,Agha etc acted along with them.Director was Mohammed Hussain.
Ameeta and Suresh were the leading pair of 'Teen Ustad'(61) directed by Nanabhai Bhatt.
He acted in Supporting roles of films  like 'Love Marriage,Mere Humsafar,Dillage,Brahmachari,Parde Ke Peechay' and many more.






Suresh died on July 14, 1979.

CHANDRAKANT MANDHARE

Chandrakant Mandare was a well known Marathi film actor who also acted in Hindi films and was a master of paintings and powder shading.
He was born in the year 1913 at Kolhapur,Maharashtra.He joined in 'Maharashtra Company' of Baburao painter and worked there in  designing and painting posters of Marathi films produced and directed by Baburao painter.
Impressed by his personality, Baburao Painter gave   a chance to  Chandrakant Mandhare to act in a film 'Savkari Pash' in 1935.
Later Chandrakant Mandare got chances to act as hero in films and he could act in about 100 films in his career, 77 Marathi films, 14 Hindi films and 1 English.
Well known Marathi film actor 'Suryakant Mandhare' who received Padmashri Award from Government of India was his younger brother.

 


Chandrakant Mandare did large number of Landscapes,Naturescapes and portraits.
He had widely travelled and done landscapes of the places he visited from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and foreign locations also.He had done about 350-400 paintings.He donated all his paintings and his Bungalow at Kolhapur to Government of Maharashtra where a museum is functioning at present.He died in 2001.

MASTER VINAYAK

Master Vinayak was a famous actor and director who worked mainly in Marathi and Hindi films during 1930's and 40's.
He was well talented and his contributions to Indian cinema is still  remembered.
Master Vinayak was born on 19 January 1906 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra and his real name was Vinayak Damodar Karnataski.
He was father of well known Bollywood actress Nanda and brother of Cinematographer Vasudev Karnataki.
He was stepbrother of actor Baburao Pendharkar(1896-1967).
Master Vinayak was a good friend of Mangeshkar family and he introduced Lata Mangeshkar to the film industry in his movie 'Pahilee Mangalagaur'.
He is best remembered for his movie 'Brahmachari' a Marathi film which he directed in 1938.
Master Vinayak died at the age of 41, on 19 Aug 1947.

ANITA GUHA

Anita Guha,  who was born in 1932 was a popular actress of Bollywood films mainly in mythological and historical films but also appeared in many social theme films.
She came to Bombay in 50's as a beauty pageant contestant.Her earlier films includes 'Duniya Gol Hai'(1951)  in which Karan Dewan was her hero and




J.Omprakash director, Bansher Kella in which Anup Kumar and Anita Guha were the leading pair, Tangewali(55) in which Shammi Kapoor was the hero and Anita heroine,Aankh Ke Nasha(56) another film of Shammi Kapoor-Anita Guha pair.
In 1957 her films ' Dekh Kabira Roya' directed by Amia Chakravorty,Gateway of India,Ek Jhalak in which Pradeep Kumar,Vyjanthimala, and Anita Guha acted in pivot roles were noted films.
Rajender Kumar and Ameeta were the leading pair of 'Goonj Uthi Shehnai'(59) which was a super hit film and Anita Guha portrayed the character 'Rami' in it which received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Pyar Ki Rahen (59) was another critically



acclaimed film of that year in which Pradeep Kumar acted opposite Anita.
Kishore Kumar acted as the hero of 'Chacha Zindabad' of 1959 in which Anita Guha was the female lead.
'Sanjaog' directed by Pramod Chakravorty was a super hit film of Pradeep Kumar and Anita Guha pair in 1961.
She acted as heroine of so many mythological and historical films.
In the film 'Maya Bazaar' directed by Babubhai Mistry she was Rajkumari Surekha, and Raj Kumar acted as 'Abhimanyu'.Mahipal depicted Shree Krishna.
Sita Devi's role in 'Sampoorna Ramayana(1961) earned her much accolades.

Kan kan Mein Bhagwan(63), Veer Bhimsen(64),Mahasati Anasuya(64),Dev Kanya(63),Jai Dwarakadheesh(77),Krishna Krishna(86) etc are some of her well noted mythological films.
In 1971 Abhi Bhattacharya acted as Lord Vishnu and Anita Guha as Devi Lakshmi in 'Tulsi Vivah'.
In 1975 'Jai Santoshi Maa' became a mega  hit in which Anita Guha acted in title role.The film became very popular all over India and she also gained nationwide  popularity and respect.In that film Bharat Bhushan,Trilok Kumar,Rajni Bala etc acted along with her.
In 1976 in the film 'Jai Mahalakshmi Maa' Anita Guha acted in title role.
Kavi Kalidas,Maharaja Vikram, Samrat Pritviraj Chauvan, etc are some of her  historical films.
She was married to actor Manik Dutt.She died in Mumbai on 20 June 2007.

DINA PATHAK

Dina Pathak appeared in large number of Bollywood films in roles such as 'Aunt/Mother/ Or Grand Mother' and always excelled in acting skill.Because of her natural way of acting style she was a favourite actor for art film and parallel cinema directors also.
Dina Pathak was born in 1922 at Bhavnagar in Gujarat.
She possessed intrinsic acting talents and started acting in plays from childhood.She joined Indian National Theatre at an young age.While studying at Mumbai University she actively participated in student activities and associated with theatre also.
In 1948 she acted in a Gujarati film 'Kariyawar' but returned to theatre.
She came back  to cinema field after two decades,  in 1966 with the film 'Uski Kahani' and received Bengal Journalist's Association Award for it.
In 1969  her three films released which were 'Satyakam,Saat Hindustani and The Guru'.
In 70's the audience liked her loving and caring mother or peace loving Grandmother roles in several films like 'Kinara,Mausam,Kitaab,Chitchor,Bhumika'and many more.
In Gulzar's 'Koshish'(72) she acted as 'Durga' who is 'Aarti's(Jayabhaduri) mother.
In the film 'Chit Chor'(76) her role as Mrs.P.Choudhary, the loving,caring yet selfish  mother of innocent Geeta P.Choudhary is unforgettable.
In the Shyam Benegal's Bhumika she presented fantastic acting skill.
In 1979  she portrayed 'Kamala Srivastava'  who sportingly plays mother to Amol Palekar in the film 'Gol Maal'.The film was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
A contrast to this role was in 'Khubsurat'(80) in which she portrayed a disciplinarian character again which was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
Her best performances in films like 'Mirch Masala,Tamas and Ijaazat' were critically acclaimed.
She also appeared in  TV serials like 'Malgudi Days' and acted in noted Gujarati movies like 'Bhavni Bhavai' 'Moti Ba' etc.
She died on 11Oct 2002 In Bandra, Mumbai.

JAYSHREE SHANTARAM

Jayshree was an accomplished film actress and was wife of film maker V.Shantaram.
She acted mainly in Hindi and Marathi Films which were mostly directed by her husband.
She was born in 1921 in Chinatown in Calcutta.
She acted in a Marathi film 'Shejari' in 1941 which was directed by V.Shantaram.
Inthe film 'Dr.Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani'(1946) which was directed by





V.Shantaram, Shantaram also acted in main role  opposite Jayshree.
In the film 'Shakunthala'(43), which was directed by Shantaram, Chandramohan acted as King Dushyanta and Jayshree was 'Shakuntala'.
In the film 'Subah ka Tara' her daughter Rajshree also acted.
In the film 'Parchhaiyan'(52) V.Shantaram directed the film and also acted in it.
Jayshree was the heroine.
In the film 'Dahej' she acted as the character 'Chanda' and in the film 'Dahej' and in the film  'Sodari' she acted as the character 'Chanchala Devi'.
She has two children, one daughter and a son.Her daughter Rajshree is well known former  Bollywood  actress.Her son Kiran Shantaram served as the Sheriff of Bombay for a term.
Jayshree died on October 19, 2004 in Bombay.
