JAYANT

Jayant was a popular Bollywood actor of character roles who worked in films from 1930's to mid 70's.He had appeared in lead roles of several films during 30's and  later confined to character roles.He is also famous as  father of the late 'Amjad Khan'.His grand children are also movie actors and directors.
Jayant was born as 'Zakaria Khan' in Peshwar (Now in Pakisthan) on 15 October 1915.The screen name 'Jayant' was given to him by famous film director Vijay Bhatt.His entry in to films was by a Gujarati film of Vijay Bhatt "Sansaar Leela" in which he had a small role.Jayant was a Police Officer who left the job to join films because of his flair for acting.He could make a good impression in 'Sansar Leela' and in several movies  of 'Prakash Pictures' he acted as the hero in the next few years.
He was hero of Prakash Pictures films like 'Bambai Ki Sethani(35),Bombay Mail(35),Azad Veer(36),Sneh lata(36),Challenge(36),His Highness(37),Khwab Ki Duniya(37), Bijli(37),State Express(38),Hero No.1(39).
He acted in lead roles of some other films made by other producers also.
In 1949 he acted  as father of Prem G. Shankar(Suresh) in the film 'Dulari' which was directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar.Madhubala acted in title  role as 'Dulari'.
He was noted for his character roles in 'Amar' (54) in which Dilip and Madhubala were the leading pair,Yasmin(55) in which Suresh and Vyjayantimala acted as the leading pair,Tangewali(55) in which Shammi Kapoor and Anita Guha were the main pair.
In the successful movie 'Insaniyat'(55) in which Dev Anand,Bina Rai,Dilip  Kumar,Vijayalaxmi,P.Jayraj,Shobhana Samarth etc acted he was excellent as 'Raja Zangoora'.
In the Dilip Kumar-Vyjayantimala film 'Madhumati'(1958) directed by Bimal Roy, he acted as father of Madhumati(Vyjayantimala).This romantic,mystery film was a big success.
He acted along with Rajendra Kumar and Meena Kumari in 'Zindagi aur Khwab'.
'Leader' was a well noted film of 1964 in which Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala were the lead and Jayant received accolades for his character as 'Diwan Mahendranath'.
In the Manoj Kumar-Mala Sinha film 'Himalay Ki Godh Mein'(65), Jayant received appreciation as dacoit 'Lakhan Singh'.
His performance as 'Hawaldaar-Major Jaswant Singh' received accolades in the film 'Mera Gaon Mera Desh'(71) which was directed by Raj Khosla.
Jayant died on 2nd June 1975.
