I.S.JOHAR

Indersingh Johar was born on February 16, 1920 at Talaganj(Now in Pakistan). He was an actor, writer, producer and director who worked in Bollywood from 1950's to 80's and was very much loved by the common masses.
He studied at F.C.  College,  Lahore and passed B.A. Degree course.During the partition period in 1947 he visited Patiala,Punjab in India for participating in a marriage ceremony of a relative  with his family members and during that time riots broke out in Lahore and  the family never returned.The family settled in Delhi and  I.S.Johar who was interested in films went to Bombay to try his luck in Bollywood films.
His acting debut was with Roop K.Shorey's 'Ek Thi Ladki'.Thus started his film career in which he acted in numerous films, wrote screenplays, produced and directed many films.Some of the  films produced and directed by I.S.Johar were considered as B grade films, but those films also  had much influence among common people.He used the film medium as an effective weapon to eradicate the superstitions and evils prevailed in the society in a humorous way.













He was a satirist who used comedy to criticize the malpractices and inappropriate customs and beliefs existed in that period and against the culprits in all sectors.His films guaranteed easy laughs and the common working people who approached films as a cheap source of entertainment flocked to see his films.His name was such popular among them  and so he effectively utilized his surname as the name for his several films.  'Johar in Kashmir,Johar in Bombay,Mera Naam Johar' etc and combining with famous comedian actor Mehmood, he made films like 'Johar Mehmood in Goa,Johar Mehmood in Hongkong' etc which were all comedy films  and that  contained rib-tickling performances and sequences.
In many of his films Sonia Sahni was the heroine.
He appeared in some International films such as 'Harry Black(58),North West Frontier(59),Death of the Nile(78) and in a US TV series Maya(67).
He also acted in a few Punjabi films like 'Chaddin Di Doli,Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai,Yamla Jatt' etc.
I.S.Johar won Best Comedian Filmfare Award for his hilarious comedy in the film 'Johny Mera Naam' in 1971.
Some of the films I.S.Johar directed are 'Nastik,Shrimati Ji,Hum Sub Chor Hai,Badal Gaya Insan,Aage Badho,Jai Bangladesh,5 Rifles,Nasbandi,Johar Mehmood in Goa' etc.
He wrote and directed  a  film  'Nasbandi' in which he criticized a  particular Government policy in a humorous manner.
As a writer some of his films are ' Bewaqoof,Nasbandi, 5 Rifles,Crorepathi,Bhai Bahen,Nastik etc.
He produced films like 'Bewaqoof,Johar Mehmood in Goa,Johar in Kashmir,Nasbandi,5 Rifles' etc.
I.S.Johar died on March 10, 1984 in Mumbai.
