NOOR MOHAMMED CHARLIE

 Noor Mohammed Charlie was the first comedian of Hindi Cinema.
Noor Mohammed Memon hailed from Ranavav Village of Porbandar.His acting career started in 1925 through silent films.He acted in the talkie 'Zarina' in 1932 which earned him much appreciation and accolades.Jaal Merchant and Zubaida were the leading pair of this film.
During childhood itself he was impressed by films and instead of going to school he preferred to go to Cinema halls and thus got expelled from the school.He started the work of Umbrella repairing in Mumbai for a living.One day he visited Imperial Film Company and offered his services.Being found that he could also sing well he was selected for a salary of Rs.40/-.
Noor Mohammed was a big fan of Charlie Chaplin and imitated his mannerisms which were very much funny and was liked by the audience.His mustache was also similar to Charlie Chaplin.He largely adapted the acting style of Charlie Chaplin and therefore he was called as 'Noor Mohammed Charlie'.
Even though he imitated Charlie Chaplin's style to an extent, he had his own style of  comedy acting which influenced his contemporaries like Johnny Walker and Mehmood.
He enjoyed stardom of that period and was one of the best paid stars.
He acted in lead roles also of some films.In the film 'Chand Tara' he was the hero opposite Swaranlata.In 'Ghazal' he acted as hero opposite Leela Chitnis, and in the film 'Dulhan' Chandraprabha was his heroine.
After partition he moved to Pakistan where he continued to be a comedian actor.
He acted in an Indian film 'Akeli Mat Jaiyo' in 1963.
He died on June 30, 1983 in Karachi.
