PRITHVIRAJ KAPOOR

Prithviraj Kapoor was one of the pioneer of Indian cinema and theatre who will  be always remembered for his vivid contributions in these fields.As the founder of 'Prithviraj Theatre' in Bombay he was hard working and adventurous  to travel all over India with the travelling troupe and staged several classic plays which entertained the masses.He was a virtuoso who handled the protagonist roles himself in all his plays and gained much admiration.
Prithviraj Kapoor was a humanist,social reformer and a very compassionate person who helped  so many poor people.He worked for cinema from the silent era of films but gave more attention for stage plays.
Prithviraj Kapoor was born in Lyalpur in the city of Peshawar  on November 3, 1901 as the son of a Police Officer.He moved to Bombay in late 20's and as an educated youth who knew several languages including English who was able to handle any type of work could get a dignified job easily.The moment he decided to take acting as his career turned to be a boon for the Indian audience, since for five generations from thereon  till now, from his  Kapoor family great actors entertained the masses with their wonderful acting talents.
His entry in to films was with the silent movie 'Do Dhaari Talwar' in 1929.
After acting in many silent movies Prithviraj Kapoor acted in a supporting role in India's first sound film 'Alam Ara' in 1931.Throughout 30's he played lead roles of Hindi films produced by New Theatres of Calcutta.
He launched 'Prithviraj' moving theatre in 1942 and travelled widely.He could inspire young generation of those times to join freedom struggle and Quit India movement through his plays.His contributions to upsurge Indian theatre by his hard working efforts for 16 years is remarkable.As a skilful and transcendent  actor who promoted both celluloid and theatre scenario his contributions were great.In films like Sikhandar(41),Awara(51) and Mughal-e-Azam(60) he presented superb acting talents.
He was given 'Padma Bhushan' Award in 1969.



He was posthumously awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1972 for his contributions to Indian Cinema.He served as a  nominated member of Rajya Sabha, Upper House of Indian Parliament also.

GEETA BALI

Geeta Bali was a beautiful heroine actress of Bollywood who left this world untimely when she was still young.
Geeta Bali was born  in 1930 as Harkirtan Kaur at Sargodha village of Punjab.
Her family later moved to Mumbai
Her parents were well educated.Her father Pandit Kartar Singh was a well known Philosopher and Sikh devotional songs singer.Her grandfather was the founder of a girls secondary school which was established in 1904.
Her parents encouraged their daughters to learn classical dance,horse riding  etc which in the long run helped Geetabali in her film career.
Geeta Bali started as child artist in films  at the age of 12 by acting in  'Gobbler'.
During the 50's she became a heroine artist and worked earlier with her future brother in law 'Raj Kapoor'  in 'Bawre Nain' and future father in law Prithviraj Kapoor in 'Anand Math'.
On 23 August 1955 she married Shammi Kapoor who was working with her in the film 'Coffee House'.They had  two children-son Aditya and daughter Kanchen.





One of her well remembered film is 'Anand Math' produced by Filmstan and  directed by Hement Gupta.It was a patriotic historical film.The film starred Pritviraj Kapoor,Bharat Bhooshan,Pradeep Kumar and Geeta Bali.It was debut film of Pradeep Kumar in Hindi.
'Bawre Nain'(1950) was a film in which Raj Kapoor and Geeta Bali paired.
It was produced and directed by Kidar Nath.
'Baazi' was another memorable film which was produced by Dev Anand and directed by Guru Dutt.Dev Anand and Geeta Bali acted in main roles.
Mr.India(61) was directed  and Produced by G.P.Sippy.Geeta Bali,I.S.Johar,Helen,Feroz Khan etc were the actors.
Films 'Ghazal'(51) with Sheikh Muktar,Albela(51) with Bhagwan Dada,Jaal(52) with Dev Anand,Baaz(55) with Guru Dutt etc received accolades.
Vachan(55) and Kavi(55) earned much appreciation for her acting talents.
She passed away on 21 Jan 1965 due to small pox.May her soul rest in peace.

SURENDRA

Surendranath B.A. LLB wanted to be a leading advocate himself and  by his friends and well-wishers but his artistic talents and singing skill made him an actor singer of Hindi films.He was famous hero during 1936 to 50's and known as 'Surendra'.
He was born on November 11, 1910 in Batla village of Punjab.
His entry in to film field was with the movie 'Deccan Queen'.
He got recognized as a singing actor by the hit film 'Manmohan'.His mentor music director Anil Biswas  fortified his singing skill by giving chance in films like Gramaphone singer,Ghareeb,Jawani ,Alibaba,Aurat,Jeewan Saathi and many more.He was called as Saighal of Bombay but possessed his own style of acting and singing.
He sang songs for music directors like Naushad,K.Dutta,Ram Gangulay,Khemchand Prakash,S.D.Burman etc.
Naushad gave him a nice song with Noor Jehan in the film 'Anmol Ghadi' which is still a hit.
Since that song was a   huge success  he gave more  nice songs for him in films like 'Anokhi Ada,Elaan' etc.
Khem Chand's 'Bharthari' received much appreciation for Surendra.
His duet 'Teri Nazar mein' with Suraiah for the film '1857' earned good response from music lovers.
His portrayal as the great classical singer 'Tansen' for the hit film 'Baiju Bawara' is still lovely remembered.He did not sing for this film.
As a singer his best films are' Gramaphone singer,Gharib,Jawani,Village girl,Vishwas,Vishkanya,Aurat' etc.
After the song "Teri Yaad ka deepak jalta hai din raat" for the 1954 film 'Gawaiya' he took a long gap for singing career  in films but continued as a supporting actor.
As an actor he got laurels in films like " Dil Deke Dekho, Mughal-e-Aazam,Baaghi,Geeth Gaya Pathraron ne,Waqt,An Evening in Paris,Milan etc.






Surendra sang for the film 'Pati Patni' in 1964 with Mannadey.
This great singer actor left this world in 1987.
