RAGHUVARAN

Raghuvaran was an excellent actor of South India who has acted in several Hindi films also.He was extremely talented to portray character and Villain roles.He possessed unique rich voice which he used modulating effectively as per the requirement of his roles.He had his own style of acting which enthralled the audience.
Raghuvaran was born at Kollengode of Palakkad District on 11 Dec 1958 to parents Velayudhan and Kasturi.He had his college studies at Coimbatore.He joined a professional drama troupe of Chennai and while working there got a chance in the Tamil movie 'Ezhavathu Manithan' in 1982.In the same year he got a role in the Malayalam film 'Kakka' which was directed by P.N.Sundaram and acted along with 'Nizhalkal Ravi(Kakka Ravi) and Rohini in it.He later married 'Rohini' and has a child in her.They but got separated and divorced.
          Raghuvaran's acting skill was highly acclaimed and he got several state awards and Filmfare awards.For the Malayalam film 'Daivanthinte Vikrithikal' which was directed by Lenin Rajendran in 1994, he was considered for the National Award as Best Actor but at the final stage the award was won by Mithun Chakraborty.In the film 'Daivanthinte Vikrithikal' he portrayed the  role as Father Alphonso which received accolades from all sectors.
In the Malayalam film 'Sooryamanasam' directed by Viji Thampi in 1992 he presented villain role in a sophisticated subtle way which grabbed the appreciation of the audience.That film got critical acclaim as well as the character 'Putturumeez' which was presented by Mammootty very effectively.
Raghuvaran acted in 'Vyuham' a Malayalam film directed by Sangeeth Sivan in 1990 as 'Tony Leous' an undercover agent.He also portrayed memorable roles in Malayalam films 'Manthrikam, Kizhakkan Pathrose, Kavacham' Peterscott,Rugma etc'.
Raghuvaran also acted in some Telugu and Kannada films which were also huge success in those languages.He had acted mostly in Tamil films.
In the Tamil film 'Anjali' which was directed by Mani Ratnam, as the father of mentally retarded child he was excellent and at the same time he could easily baffle the audience with villain and debaucher characters.His roles in films like 'Baasha,Mudhalvan' etc  are examples.His baritone was always appreciated.
Raguvaran died on 19 March 2008 due to cardiac arrest early in the morning.

ODUVIL UNNIKRISHNAN

Oduvil Unnikrishnan was an actor who possessed immense abilities to portray any type of character naturally.He was brilliant to present serious roles and comedy roles with equal perfection.He could present  the role of a layman or as the Head of an Aristocratic joint family, without any difficulty.He proved his versatile abilities  by several challenging roles of many films which received accolades from the audience.He was also a musician who had undergone training in vocal music,to play percussion instruments like









Mridangam,Tabala etc also.
Oduvil Ummikrishnan was born at Wadakkancherry to parents Krishna Menon and Parukutty Amma on 13 Feb 1944.He worked with some orchestra group  as a Tabalist and later worked with K.P.A.C, Kerala Kalavedi etc as  a Tabala player.On many occasions he had to act on stage for fill-in  roles.
'Darsanam' directed by P.N.Menon was his first film followed by 'Chenda' directed by A.Vincent.Bharathan gave him the role of a mahout in his film 'Guruvayoor Kesavan'.Hariharan gave him a role in his film 'Sarapanjaram'  and thus Oduvil Unnikrishnan became an artiste of Malayalam film Industry.Thoppil Bhasi,Hariharan and Sathyan Anthikkad gave him notable roles which boosted his acting career.Sathyan Anthikkad utilized his acting abilities in many of his films.
He was part of Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Award winning films 'Nizhalkuthu, Kadhapurushan' and M.T.Vasudevan Nair's 'Oru Cheru Punchiri'.
He was brilliant  for his dialogue presentation with the proper local style that appropriate suitably the most with emotive tone such that the characters empathized intelligently.Examples are roles in films 'Sargam,Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu,Njangal Santhushtaranu,Yodha,Aaram Thampuran,Oru Cheru Punchiri,Vadhu Doctoranu,Aniyan Bava Chettan Bava' etc.
He received Best Supporting actor Award in 1985 for 'Kadhapurushan', Best Supporting actor Award in 1996 for 'Thooval Kottaram', Best Actor Award in 2002 for 'Nizhal Kuthu'.
He composed music for an album 'Parasuram Express' , music for some devotional songs and a film 'Sarvam Saha'.
He died on 27 May 2006 due to kidney related diseases at the age of 62.

MAVELIKKARA PONNAMMA

Mavelikkara Ponnamma   gave importance to drama field rather than cinema and hence  the number of films are less in her acting career.She is remembered for the numerous roles which she handled for All India Radio skits and on stages.
During her last years of life she was more concentrating on films and T.V. serial roles.She was excellent as mother,grandmother roles.Her roles in films 'Aakasa kottayile Sultan,Ennodishtam Koodamo,Valayam etc  were nice.

than becoming a film actor.Such an actor who was very popular and had given much contributions to the Professional drama  was S.J.Dev.He worked with several well known troupes and later owned his own drama troupe also.
He was none other than the father of famous  film actor 'Rajan P.Dev.'
Rajan P.Dev also paid much interest for promoting professional drama and had owned  'Cherthala Jubilee Theatres'.
S.J.Dev had acted in some films also.He was one of the actors of 'Nirmala' which was released in 1948.Then he played a role in 'Rakthabandham(1951)
He acted in 'Yachakan' directed by Velappan Nair in 1951.
He could act in 'Marumakal' which was the first film of Prem Nazir (1952)
He appeared mostly in the films of 'Udaya Studio' which were directed by M.Kunchacko.
He played roles in films " Umma of 1960, Rebecca 63, Unniyarcha 61
Paalattu Koman in 62,Neeli Sali in 60, Lora Nee Evide in 1971".
His contributions to theatrical field and cinema can not be forgotten.

SILK SMITHA

Silk Smitha was a very popular actress and dancer in all South Indian languages.She could appear in some Hindi films also.At the peak of her popularity she was very much adorned by the audience such that by just adding a dance number of Silk Smitha could attract large number of youths to cinema halls.She saved several films which were rejected by distributors by allowing to include  her dance.
Silk Smitha was born in 'Eluru' Andhra Pradesh, on 2 Dec 1960.She got married  when she was very young and  did not like to live with her husband.She moved to Chennai and lived with her aunt.Her real name was 'Vijayalakshmi Vadiapati'.At Chennai she worked as an extra artist at film studios.She was lucky to get help from a well wisher who taught her English language and dancing.She got small roles in films and acted in films like 'Ivar', Inayethedi etc.

She was given main role of Tamil film 'Vandichakram' which became a huge hit and the name of the character 'Silk' was added to her screen name.She was but  usually called for sexy roles and sexy dances there on.
Her film ' Moondram Pirai' with Kamal Hassan and Sreedevi became huge






success and a dance sequence with Kamal Hassan earned much acclaim.This film was dubbed to Hindi as 'Sadma' which was also a big hit.'Alaigal Oivathillai' was another successful film during that period.
In the Malayalam film 'Sphadikam' the song scene with Mohan Lal was very popular.
Silk Smitha was found dead in her Chennai apartment on 23 Sept 1996.

VIJAYAN

Vijayan Menon, popularly known as Vijayan was a south Indian actor who acted mainly in Tamil films though he was a Malayali.Vijayan was born on 17 May 1944 at Kozhikode, Kerala.After his studies he took acting as his career and appeared in several Malayalam films in small roles.
Bharathi Raja noted him and gave him role in 'Kizhakke Pogum rail'(78) in which 'Radhika' was also introduced as a new face.The film was a big hit and Vijayan got established in Tamil film industry.
Films 'Niram Maratha Pookkal' of 79, was also well noted.'Man Vasanai' of 83 was a huge hit.
During 80's Vijayan earned much name and fame.He acted  in lead roles of several Tamil films in that period.Films like " Vasantha Kalam, Kanneer pookkal,Kannadi,Malargale Malaungal,Valli Mayil,Theru Vilakku,Thaipongal,Oli Pirandhadhu,Matravai Neril " etc are some of the films in which Vijayan acted as hero in Tamil.
He has acted in famous films like " Pasi,Oru Vidukathai  Oru Thodarkathai, NayakanmPalaivana Rojakkal," etc.
'Pasi' directed by 'Durai' in 80 won National Award as Best Tamil feature film of that year.Actress 'Shobha' who acted in lead role  of 'Pasi' got National award as Best Actress.Shobha,Delhi Ganesh,Vijayan and Senthil were the main actors of that film.
Vijayan later acted in some Malayalam films also.In 1982 he appeared in the film 'Vidhichatum Kothichathum'.In 2005 he acted in the film 'Kochi Rajavu' in which Dileep and Kavya Madhavan were the lead pair.
Vijayan died on 2007 September 22 at Chennai due to heart attack.He was 63.

ADOOR PANKAJAM

Adoor Pankajam was a very popular supporting  and comedy actress of Malayalam Cinema and was active for about six decades.She portrayed an important role in the first neo-realistic movie of India, which was produced and directed by P.Ramadas in Malayalam.She was also lucky to perform the role of an important character as 'Nalla Pennu' who was the neighbour of the heroine 'Karuthamma' of 'first National award winner as Best film of India in 1965' which was 'Chemmeen'.
Adoor Pankajam's elder sister 'Adoor Bhavani' was also very famous character artist of Malayalam cinema and she usually portrayed mother roles and mother-in-law roles.In the film 'Chemmeen' Adoor Bhavani played the role of 'Chakki' as the mother of 'Karuthamma'.The sisters appeared in several other pictures also together.
Adoor Pankajam  was born in 'Adoor' in the year 1929.She joined a drama troupe of Kannur when she was 12 years old.After playing a drama for more than 300 stages, she joined a drama troupe of 'Chengannur' and played a comic role which was loved by the audience.From there on, she was given comedy roles mostly for dramas and it happened for movies also when she became a film artist.







Her first film was 'Premalekhanam'(1952) but 'Visapinte Vili(52) directed by Mohan Rao, which was produced by Kunchacko and K.V.Koshy was released first.Then she appeared in 'Sario Thetto' directed by Thikkurissi and P.N.Roynald.Afterwards she was cast in films like 'C.I.D,Kidappadam,Bhagya Jathakam,Kadalamma' etc and became an established film actress.She was mostly called for all 'Udaya' films.She used to be a pair with S.P.Pillai for comedy roles in earlier Malayalam films.
While acting in films also Adoor Pankajam was active with Ballet dance troupe and drama troupe which were based in Adoor  because of her love towards theatre.
She got Kerala Government second Best Actress Award for her role in 'Sabarimala Ayyappan'.
In 2008 'Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy' honoured Adoor Panjam for her overall contributions to theatre and dramas.
She died on 25 June 2010.

MURALI

Malayalam actor Murali acquired the title 'Bharath Murali' after winning the National Award as Best actor in 2002 for his lead role as 'Appu Mestri' in the film 'Neythukaran' directed by Priyanandan.
Murali was a versatile Malayalam film actor who was also active in Tamil and Telugu movies also.He was brilliant to portray character roles and villain roles.He played lead roles also excellently well as like in the film 'Aadharam' of 1992.He was the Chairman of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy from 2006 to till his death.He was also the  Director of 'Malayalam Communications' which runs TV channels 'Karali TV,People TV and We TV'.

Murali hailed from 'Kudavattoor' of Kollam District and was born on 25 May 1954 to Krishna Pillai and Devaki Amma.He had his schooling at his native place and for Pre-degree course studied at Devaswom Board College,Sasthamkotta.Degree course was held at Trivandrum and later he took degree in law  by studying at Law Academy,Trivandrum.
He worked some years as Lower Division Clerk in Health Department, and Upper Division Clerk in Kerala University Office.During those years he was involved with drama troupes of 'Kavalam Narayana Panicker,'Natyagriham' of Narendra Prasad etc.He got opportunity  to act as 'Ravana' in the play 'Lanka Lakshmi' written by C.N.Sreekantan Nair and got wide appreciation.He got chance to work with the great director G.Aravindan  during that period.The acquaintance with eminent directors and theatre lead way for  the lead role in the film 'Njattadi' directed by Bharat Gopi but that film was never released.Then he was cast in 'Chidambaram' directed by G.Aravindan.

After wards he got role in 'Meenamasathile Sooryan' directed by Lenin Rajendran and 'Panchagni' directed by Hariharan.Panchagni was released first and the Villain role in that film earned accolades and Murali was accepted by film world as an actor.Murali maintained his position with dedication,hard work,determination,endurance and enthusiasm.The audience liked his Police Officer roles and Villain roles he portrayed in earlier films.He also appeared in nice character roles like those in 'Dasaratham' etc.


Murali got accolades for his films' Dhanam, Chamayam,Champakkulam Thachan,Aye Auto,Narayam, Kireedam,Akasadoothu,Amaram,Thalolam, Venkalam,Kaanakinavu,Lal Salam,Aadharam,Neythukaran,Veeralipattu, The King,The Truth, etc etc '.

Murali authored five books which were also well appreciated.He got 'Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award ' for his book 'Abhinethavum Aasante Kavithayum'.Another book 'Abhinayathinte Rasathanthram' revealed  his deep knowl






edge about acting.
He could act in important roles of several films in Tamil and Telugu also.
The delicate but demure  lead character role in 'Aadharam' directed by Geiorge Kithu revealed the versatile qualities of Murali which the audience gave much accolades and he got Kerala Government Best Actor Award for it in 1992.
In 1990 he was selected as second best actor for his role in 'Amaram' directed by Bharathan.
He got Kerala Government Best Actor award in 1996 for 'Kana Kinavu' and in 1998 for film 'Thalolam'.
In 2001 he got Best actor award from Kerala Government for 'Neythukaran'.
In 2002 he got National Award as Best Actor for film 'Neythukaran'.
In 2007 he was selected as second best actor by Kerala Government for films 'Veeralipattu and Pranayakalam'.
Murali got Best TV actor award in 2005.
He was also recipient of awards from Filmfare and some other organisations.
Murali was CPI(M) candidate for Lok Sabha Elections from Alapuzha in 1999 but he lost to V.M.Sudheeran.
Murali died in Trivandrum on August 6, 2009 at the age of 55.
