JAMSHEDJI FRAMJI MADAN

Jamshedji Framji Madan was born at  Bombay in 1856 and  in the long run he  built his business empire with Calcutta as the Head-quarters.He was a drama artist who later owned his own drama troupe.He started diversified business projects like film exhibition,import of foreign feature films and distribution,real estate,insurance,import of food items,owning theatre auditoriums across the country and many more.
When Dada Saheb Phalke's 'Raja Harishchandra' was seen by him , the urge to produce feature films ignited in his mind.He produced 'Satyavadi Raja Harischandra' under the banner of 'Elphinstone Bioscope Company' in 1917.He produced 'Bilwamangal' in 1919 and then launched 'Madan Theatres' a joint stock company which produced,distributed and exhibited films.
The third film was 'Nala Damayanti' and these films had European Directors and crew.J.F.Madan died in 1923 and his son J.J.Madan took over the main  charge of the company and film making.
Under his leadership the company was modernised and achieved  much more prosperity.In 1920 they controlled 51 theatres but in 1931 they were having 126 cinema auditoriums across the country.They had film business in undivided India,Burma and Ceylon.
Nala Damayanti,Dhruva Charitra,Ratnavali,Savitri Satyavan,Bishavriksha,Durga Nandini,Radha Rani,Giribala,Patni Pratap,Pati Bhakti' were all silent films made by Madan Pictures.
Films'Pati Bhakti,Noor Jehan,Patni Pratap,Pampered Youth etc were all  silent films directed by J.J.Madan
First Bengali talkie was made by Madan pictures 'Jamai Shashsthi' which was released on 11 April 1931.Hindi talkie 'Shirin Farhad' was also made and  released in 1931 which was directed by J.J.Madan himself.
Later J.J. Madan Produced ,Directed,Distributed  several  talkie films including Hindi and Bengali.Several other  Directors also directed films for the Company.During the period 1917-1937 Madan Theatres produced 113 Films including silent films.
