NIRUPA ROY

Nirupa Roy was a successful Indian actress who pioneered as the greatest ideal Indian mother on screen who used to suffer silently always by sacrificing
all the worldly pleasures for the sake of her Children.She manifested a large number of mythological characters like Devi Parvati,Devi Maha Lakshmi,Devi Kali,Seeta Devi,Rani Damayanti, etc  etc and got a strong Goddess image such that many film goers used to visit her house to get her blessings.
                     Nirupa Roy was born as ' Kokila Krishnachandra Bulsara' in Valsad of Gujrat  on 4 Jan 1931and she settled in Mumbai after her marriage with Kamal Roy.She responded to an advertisement in Newspaper for new actors in films by applying for the same and got chance in a Gujarati film in the year 1946.She could act in a Hindi film 'Amar Raj' in the same year.With the 1948 film 'Guna Sundari' she became a star.
In the year1950 she played the role of Parvati Devi in the mythological film 
'Har Har Mahadev'There after she was cast for several mythological films like 
"Sri Vishnu Bhagwan,Sri Ganesh Janma,Jai Maha Kali,Sri Ganesh Vivah,Krishna Sudama,Dasavataar,Shiv Shakti" etc with actors like 'Manohar Desai,Trilok Kapoor,Jairaj' etc.
She could act in several realistic films in main roles opposite Bharat Bhushan,Balraj Sahni,Ashok Kumar etc.
The film 'Do Bigha Zamin' of 1953 directed by Bimal Roy was a trend setter in which Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy were in lead roles. 'Do Bigha Zamin' means
'Two acres of land' and the story was about a poor farmer who was tortured by big land lords.The film won Filmfare Best Movie award and it was the first Indian film to win the International Prize at Cannes Film Festival.
Her appearance in films like 'Bhai Bhai,Bedard,Zamana Kya Jaane, etc were  well appreciated.She got accolades for films 'Kavi Kalidas,Samrat Chandragupta' etc also.'Do Roti' of 57 in which Balraj Sahni was her pair, Shaheed(65) in which Manoj Kumar acted opposite to her were all good films.Other noted films include 'Rani Roopmati,Razia Sultana,Garam Coat,Pehli Tareekh' etc.






'Munimji' was a film released in 56 in which Dev Anand and Nalini Jaywant were in lead roles.It was directed by Subodh Mukherjee in which Nirupa Roy was in supporting role.She got Filmfare award as  Best Supporting actress  for this film.
In 1962 for her supporting role in film 'Chhaya' which was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee  in which Sunil Dutt and Ashaparekh were in lead role, she won Filmfare award.
In the 1964 film 'Shehnai' which was directed by S.D.Narang, she got Filmfare award for supporting actress.
She received Filmfare Lifetime achievement award in 2003.
Nirupa Roy was referred as 'the queen of misery' by the repetition of typical 
suffering Indian mother which was stereotyped in several films starting with
the sensational film 'Deewar' of 1975.Nirupa Roy was highlighted in this Amitabh Bachchan,Shashi Kapoor film.Amitabh Bachchan got established the 'angry young man ' image by this film.Later on  in several films of Amitabh Bachchan like 'Amar Akbar Anthony,Muqadder ka Sikhander,Suhaag,Mard' etc Nirupa Roy was in his mother's role. She could act in supporting roles and mother's role in many   films of all famous actors like Sunil Dutt,Shashi Kapoor,Vinod Khanna,Sanjeev Kumar,Jeetendra,Dharmendra etc.When she acted after a long gap in 1999 film 'Lal Badshah'  it was also an Amitabh Bachchan film.
She passed away on October 13, 2004 at Mumbai due to Cardiac arrest.
