Dara Singh was world renowned wrestler and world Cup Holder in wrestling.He was also well famed actor of Bollywood films for several decades.During the 60's and 70's he was the hero of large number of B grade Hindi films  and most of them were success at the box Office.Later he used to accept character roles and supporting roles.He was good for mythological roles like Lord Shiv,Bhim Sen,Hanumanji etc which boosted his popularity very high.
Dara Singh was born as Deedar Singh Randhawa  at a dusty village 'Dharmu Chak' of Amritsar District in Punjab to Parents Surat Singh and Balwant Kaur on 19Nov 1928.
He grew up as a stout young muscle man and went to Malaya(today's Malaysia) in 1947 at the age of 19  by the invitation of one of his uncle who was staying there.That uncle suggested him to take up Wrestling as a career.Within a couple of years he became Champion of Malaysia by beating Tarlok Singh who was another Indian expatriate and champion of Malaysia.
In 1952 he came back to India and tried to become the Champion of India.It was not a difficult task for him and soon he became the Champion of Punjab and Champion of Hindustan also.Then he tried for becoming the world Champion which also he achieved within a few years.
Meanwhile he was lucky to become a film actor unexpectedly.In 1952 itself when he returned to India from Malaysia he got a small role in the film 'Sangdil' which became a hit.Dara Singh got roles continuously from there on and in 1962 he became hero of the film 'King Kong' which was a very big hit film.In 1963 he partnered with actress Mumtaz and the audience loved the pair very much so that Dara Singh-Mumtaz pair appeared in 16 films which were all box office success films.
In several films he acted as Pahalwan,Tarzan,Thief etc but he was well accepted as mythological characters such as Lord Shiva,Bhim Sen,Hanumanji etc.In the very famous T.V.Serials 'Ramayan' of  Ramanand Sagar and
'Mahabharat' T.V.Serial made  by B.R.Chopra which was directed by Ravi Chopra he was Hanumanji.In the role as Hanuman he was very much appreciated by the viewers and he became very popular in every nook and corner of India.He could act in some other famous T.V.Serials for other channels also which earned him accolades.
Dara Singh proved his diversified talents by directing 7 Punjabi films and 2 Hindi films.His directional venture 'Bhakti Mein Shakti' ran at Delhi's Imperial cinema for record number of days.He was story writer of seven films and he produced eight  films.There was production banner 'Dara Films' which was established in 1970.He was the proud owner of  a film Studio also at Mohli in Punjab.

He acted in a Malayalam film, Mutharam Kunnu P.O. which was directed by Sibi Malayil in 1985 and in 1986 he appeared in a Tamil film of Rajanikanth-Ambika pair by name "Maveeran'.
Out of the films he acted in his career several films  were blockbuster films like ' Anand' of Rajesh Khanna in 1971,Mera Desh Mera Dharam produced by himself,Dharmatma' of Feroz Khan,'Karma' of Dilip Kumar,Ajooba produced by Shashi Kapoor,'Kal Ho Naa Ho' of Sharukh Khan etc.
His last Punjabi film was 'Dil Apna Punjabi' and Hindi film was 'Jab we met'.
Dara Singh was nominated member of 'Rajya Sabha' from 2003 to 2009.
He passed away on 12 July 2012.
