Nutan was the eldest daughter of actress Shobhana Samarth and Director-poet
Kumarsen Samarth.She was born on 14 June 1936.One of her younger sister Tanuja also became an actress of Bollywood and Tanuja's daughter Kajol also became a famous actress of Bollywood.
Nutan and Tanuja were  introduced to film field by the film 'Hamari Beti' in 1950
when Nutan was only 14 years old. Hamari Beti  was a film produced and directed by her mother Shobhana Samarth.Nutan  could act in films  'Humlog' and  'Nagina'  the next year.
Nutan was elected as 'Miss India' in  1952 which also boosted her film career.The release of film 'Seema' helped her to attain critical acclaim and she
got entry to the hearts of millions as a versatile and cute actress.Her expressive eyes,mesmerizing voice and emotive dialogue delivery all received
wide admiration.Her movements and actions were all graceful and the audience loved to watch her in negative roles as well.The role as a criminal in the film 'Seema' earned her Filmfare Best Actress Award.
In the Bimal Roy's film 'Sujatha' she  paired with Sunil Dutt which turned to be a blockbuster.The theme of 'Sujatha' was the love affair of an untouchable girl and a Brahmin boy.
With Dev Anand she created big hits like 'Paying Guest'(57),  Baarish (57),
Manzil(60), and Tere Ghar Ke Samne (63).
Paying Guest was a film directed by Subodh Mukherjee.In the film 'Tere Ghar ke Samne' directed by Vijay Anand,  'Dev Anand' acted as a Western educated  architect who loved a modern Indian girl who closely followed  Indian culture.

'Chhalia' was a 1960 film directed by Manmohan Desai which was a comedy love story  and  Raj Kapoor acted as the hero.
Nutan earned so much  appreciation for her role in the Bimal Roy's film 'Bandini'.As a prisoner who was convicted of poisoning her lover's wife,  Nutan
handled that role effectively wonderful.That role is still considered as one of the the finest portrayal of a character in the history of Hindi cinema.She could
manifest two different emotions on her face at the same time in some sequences  even without
the help of dialogue was unbelievable.
'Khandan' in which Sunil Dutt and Nutan acted as the pair and directed by Bheemsingh became a super duper hit which was a big success at the box office.
'Milan' which was Manoj Kumar's film and 'Soudagar' of Amitabh Bachchan
were also  nice films.
Nutan,Vinod Khanna,Aashaparekh, and Vijay Anand were in key roles of 'Mein Tulsi Tere Aangan  ki' which was based on a Marathi Novel  and directed by
Raj Khosla.The film earned wide appreciation and Nutan earned Filmfare Best
 actress award for it.
Dilip Kumar,Sunjay Dutt,Madhuri Dixit film 'Kanoon Apna Apna' anf the film 
Meri Jung' etc also received good opinion.She received Filmfare best supporting actress award for 'Meri Jung'.
In 1959 Nutan married Naval Officer Ramesh Behi and their son Mohnish Behi
is a character actor of Hindi films and T.V.serials.
Nutan was recipient of  Filmfare Best Actress Award five times for films"seema  
in 56, Sujatha in 59, Bandini in 63,Milan in 67 and Mein Tulsi Tere Aangan ki in 78.
She was given Padma Shri in 1974.
Nutan died on 21 Feb 1991.
