BALRAJ SAHNI

Balraj Sahni was a well famed Bollywood actor/writer/playwright  who was born in a Punjabi
Khatri family in 1913 at Rawalpindi.He studied at Lahore and completed M.A. Degree in English  Language and Literature.He also earned a B.A.Degree in Hindi. Later he got Master's
Degree in English from Punjab University also.
His brother Bhisham Sahni got fame as a writer also.

Balraj Sahni married Damayanti  and in late 1930 both of them joined Santhi Niketan as tutors.
They were teachers of English and Hindi.
He worked with Mahatma Gandhi helping him in his activities for an year in 1938.
Next year he went to England to work in BBC London's Hindi service  as a radio announcer.
He returned to India in 1943 and started acting on stage for plays of Indian People's Theatre
Association.
He got chance to act in the film 'Insaf' in 1946 followed by 'Darti ke Lal' directed by K.A.Abbas.
He got chances in films like 'Door Chalein' and he got established as a good actor by Bimal Roy's film
'Do Bigha Zameen' of 1953.
That film earned Int'l prize at Cannes Film Festival.
His portrayal in the Rabindranath's classic 'Kabuliwala' received much recognition as an actor.
Sahni's wife Damayanti who was the heroin in his film 'Gudiya'(47) died at an young age and
he married his first cousin who became famous as an author later.
Sahni could act with Nutan,Meena Kumari,Vyjayantimala,Nargis etc and his way of acting
and his own  style was appreciated and well criticized. 
His films like "Seema,Sone ki Chidiya,Sutla Bazar,Bhabhi ki Chudipian,Lajwanti,Ghar Sansar
etc were all well acclaimed films.
Sahni's character in the  film 'Waqt'(65) opposite Achala Sachdev was very much appreciated by the viewers and the song sequence "Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen" is still liked and popular.
Sahni got credit for his characters in Punjabi films such as 'Nanak Dukhiya' 'Sub Sansar'
Satlaj de Kande' etc.
His performance in his last film 'Garam Hawa' is considered as his best portrayal in films.He 






could not see that film because he died next day after dubbing.
As a writer also he was well famed.He used to write in English and Punjabi also.After a visit
to Pakistan he wrote a book 'Mera Pakistani Safar' and after a visit to Soviet Union he wrote 'Rusi Safar Nama'.He wrote many poems,short stories and auto biography named as 'Meri Filmi Aatmakatha'.
He wrote the 1951 movie 'Baazi' directed by Guru Dutt and the  lead role in that film was  acted by Dev Anand.
 He joined with P.K.Vasudevan Nair and Guru Radhakrishnan to organize first National conference of AIYF in Delhi.Balraj Sahni was elected as the first District president of All India Youth Federation of Communist Party of India.
Sahni got Padma Shri in 1969.
He was a simple person and considered as a great actor of India.He was not  involved in 
any bad activities and so a role model for others.
His son Parikshit Sahni is also a writer/actor/director in Bollywood cinema.
He debuted in the film 'Pavitra Paapi' in which Balraj Sahni was acting in a major role and
earned accolades for the film 'Anokhi Raat'.  He also has acted in about 90 films now.
Parikshit Sahni is now producing and directing a  film under the banner 'Balraj Sahni Productions'  at Himachal Pradesh location 'Rohtang Pass' at an altitude of 3,978 meters,
about the life of soldiers.
Balraj Sahni died on 13 April 1973 due to Cardiac arrest.He was 59 at the time of death.
