SRIVIDYA

Srividya was a very talented actress who was active in Tamil,Malayalam and Telugu films for a long span of forty
years.Born to a Tamil film comedian actor Krishna Murthy and Carnatic classical singer M.L.Vasantha Kumari, in Chennai on July 24 1953, she had the artistic talents by birth. Her father could not continue his profession from her childhood itself because of ill health and so her mother was so busy with her musical concerts for financial stability. Moreover M.L.Vasantha Kumari was a legend in Carnatic Music and had many fans in all the states of south India. She had to travel all over south India with her musical concerts.Srividya also used to accompany her to many concerts and played some musical instruments like veena in her mother's concerts.By attending several concerts she was also converted to an excellent Carnatic Classical singer. Moreover she had been trained in Carnatic Music from other teachers and also provided training for classical dance  from her childhood itself.
Srividya became  an expert in classical dance and classical music at the age of 15-16 itself. Her entry in to film field was as a child artist. She would have turned in to a classical singer if she did not enter films. Her debut film was 'Thiruvarutchelvar' - a Sivaji film.Afterwards in Malayalam film 'Kumara Sambhavam' she was introduced by the legend P.Subramanyam, who was Producer/Studio owner/Director.
Then she got a chance in a Telugu film in 1972 which was directed by  a great director' Dasari Narayana Rao'.
At that time Srividya was lucky enough to work under  established producers and eminent directors by which she could earn a reputation and fame. Those days K.Balachander was a well acclaimed director in Tamil and by his films 'Delhi to Madras' and Apoorva Ragangal' Sreevidya entered in to the hearts of the cine goers.
'Apoorva Ragangal' had some peculiar mentions that both Kamal Hassan and Rajani Kanth acted in that film.
Sreevidya was the heroine of both of them in that film. This was in the year 1975 by which she became a well famed actress in Tamil.
During those periods she was engaged in Malayalam movies also.In 1974 a film by name 'Ayalathe Sundari' was released which was produced by Dr.Balakrishnan and directed by Hariharan.Jayabharathi and Srividya were the heroines in that film. Adoor Bhasi, andBahadoor, had important roles in that film   and Prem Nazir was the hero. The popular song 'Laksharchana kandu madangumbol oru  Lajjayil mungiya mukham kandu..' is from that movie.
She had acted in another movie those days directed by Sasi Kumar by name 'Aaranya Kandam' and afterwards acted in 'Swamy Ayyappan' which was a block buster film of P.Subramanyam.From the film 'Hridayam oru Kshetram' onwards Srividya  was accepted as a member of the family by all Keralites.Madhu and Srividya were considered as the best pair  by the film critics of Malayalam cinema. In so many films this pair appeared later and most of them turned to be hits also.
In 1977 Madhu directed a film 'Theekkanal' in which Madhu,Srividya,Vidhubala,Mohan,Kanakadurga etc were in main roles. The film was a very big success.During the sets of that film Srividya fell in love with the executive producer of that film George Thomas and they got married without the consent of Srividya's  family members.
The marriage proved to be a failure later on with so many conflicts  and  they had to divorce. After her divorce Srividya settled in Trivandrum and mainly concentrated on  Malayalam films .Meanwhile she had changed to supporting character roles like elder sister roles and mother roles only.In these kinds of roles also she could establish  a reputation in many films like 'Kattathe Klikkoodu.Ennennum Kannettante,Ente Soorya Puthrikku,Thinkalazcha Nalla Divasam, and many more.
She was play back singer in some films like 'Ayalathe Sundari',Oru Painkili Kadha, and Nakshatra Tharaattu.'
Srividya found time to act in some Malayalam T.V. serials also.

She was found victim of Breast cancer in 2005 She had undergone treatment but in 2006 on October 14 she succumbed to death. Her funeral was done in Trivandrum and people from all sectors gathered to pay homage to her.

P.J.ANTONY

P.J.Antony was given  the National award for best actor for the first time in Kerala in the year 1974.At that time it was known as 'Bharat' award. He got that award for his brilliant performance in the film 'Nirmalyam' which was directed by 'Gnyan Peeth' award holder novelist/writer/Director M.T.Vasudevan Nair. That film was developed  from a short story 'Pallivalum Kalchilambum' written and published by M.T.Vasudevan Nair earlier.
P.J.Antony was born on 1st January 1925 at Pachalam, Kochi. His  parents were Joseph and Elizabeth. He had been in the Navy service for a short period and then returned and joined the famous K.P.A.C. Drama troupe. He was more interested to act on stage rather than acting in films. He established two professional drama troupes by the names P.J.Theaters and Prathibha Theaters.
P.J.Antony was a man of letters also.He wrote many short stories,so many songs and poems, wrote a film screen play, and  published two novels also. His novels are 'Itha Manushyan' and Oru Gramathinte Athmavu'.
He directed one Malayalam film  by name 'Periyar'.
His cinema entry was in the year 1957 with the debut film 'Randidangazhi' which was based on a novel written by 'Gnyana Peeth' award holder 'Thakazhi Siva Sankara Pillai'.Later Antony  acted as hero in the film 'Rosy'.
Then  came a blockbuster film 'Bhargavi Nilayam' in which actor Madhu and Prem Nazir was in the main roles. Vijaya Nirmala was the heroine whose character dies and appears as a ghost. The reasons for her death was revealed with several clues.Since ghost stories were rare during those days the film was a  big success.P.J Antony had his own contribution for the betterment of that film. The evergreen song of K.J.Jesudas 'Thamasamenthe Varuvan.. Pranasakhi ente munpil ..' is of Bhargavi Nilayam.
'Murapennnu' a fantastic movie released in 1965 for which story and screenplay was written by M.T.Vasudevan Nair was another noted picture of P.J.Antony.Prem Nazir and Sarada were in  the main characters of that film.P.J.Antony acted as uncle of Prem Nazir's character 'Balan'. The strict and majestic uncle character of P.J.Antony was superb in that film. The story dealt with the decline of a big joint family. The song 'Karayunno puzha chirikkunno..' created much sentimental feelings to the audience. Then followed the historical movie 'Kunjalimarakkar' and afterwards 'Balyakala Sakhi' which was written by famous novelist 'Vaikom Muhammed Bashir'.In 1967 another blockbuster film arrived 'Anveshichu Kandethiyilla' in which Sathyan and K.R.Vijaya were in main roles.
'Asuravithu' was another nice film of Antony and then followed 'Nadhi' which was a super duper hit.Prem Nazir and Sarada were in the main roles but P.J.Antony and 'Thickurissi Sukumaran Nair' had much importance in that film. The theme of that film was also unusual which attracted the audience.Adoor Bhasi,Ambika,Nellikkodu Bhaskaran,Baby Sumathy etc were all in their best in 'Nadhi'.Two families spending their vacation on two houseboats and the consequences thereupon was the theme of that film. The song 'Aayiram Padasangal kilungi, Aluvapuzha pinneyum ozhuki..... sung by Jesudas is still very popular.
In 1973 released 'Nirmalyam' which was written and directed by M.T.Vasudevan Nair.As a director it was M.T's first venture. In that film P.J.Antony  was in the main role as the 'Velichapadu' of a 'Bhagawathi' temple.'Velichapadu' is a mediator between the 'devi' and the devotee as a belief, custom and practice of northern Kerala.P.J.Antony was exceptionally great as the 'Velichapadu' with correct movements, gestures and mannerisms  which was acclaimed by all.Being a Christian and  not familiar with the Hindu rituals how he managed to create the 'Velichapadu' precisely well  is a wonder. In the last part of the film there is a dance performance of the 'Velichapadu' during the temple festival which he did with extreme efficiency and perfection  which  was acclaimed by all. From this example it is evident that intelligent actors with keen observation,  study and grasp the required necessities from the society to glorify their characters.
Nirmalyam was not a commercial film but it was a neatly presented work of 'M.T' which was accepted by all the sectors of the society.Pune Film Institute Diploma holder Ravi Menon was the hero of that film as a young temple priest and 'Sumithra' was the heroine as  daughter of the 'Velichapadu'.In his  whole film career Ravi Menon excelled perfectly well as the character in Nirmalyam and deserves much appreciation. It was actor 'Sukumaran's debut film.Kaviyoor Ponnamma was the 'Velichapadu's wife. The black and white film was a brilliant creation by all means.P.J.Antony was selected for both National film award for best actor and Kerala Government best actor award  for Nirmalyam..In 1980 he acted in another film 'Manninte Maril'..
P.J.Antony published two books as his stage memories by the names 'Ente Nadaka Smaranakal' and
P.J.Antony and Prem Nazir in Bhargavi Nilayam
P.J.Antony and Prem Nazir in 'Rosy'
'Nadakame Ulakam'.That great actor died on 14th March 1979.

father in 'Mukundetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu',Police Officer in Vandanam  were all  well appreciated roles. Boeing-Boeing was a comedy film of Priyadarshan in which Soman had a good role..In 'Akkare Akkare Akkare' which was  mostly shot in America, the theme was comedy type.  Even though Soman's role was  of a high ranked Police Officer, it created good comedy. In all these films Mohan Lal was the hero.In Number20 Madras Mail which was directed by Joshi Soman had an important villain type role in which Superstars Mammootty and MohanLal appeared together.M.G.Soman acted in so many Mammootty films also.
In I.V.Sasi film 'Eetta' and P.G.Viswambharan film 'Sathyavan Savithri' he acted with Kamal Hassan. The great Kamal Hassan was the hero in those films. In 'Sathyavan Savithri' Sreedevi was the heroine. The film with fine melodious songs was a big hit.Soman's role  was as the companion of the hero and was throughout in that film with much importance.Kamal Hassan and Soman became best friends during the shooting sets of that film and that friendship continued till Soman's death.M.G.Soman had the good quality of making good friendship and maintaining it.Last year  Kamal Hassan arrived in Trivandrum to accept an award for him.In that large award distribution ceremony Kamal Hassan in his speech expressed his grief that his best friend M.G.Soman was not alive.
