Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair entered in to Malayalam film Screen in the year 1950 during which only around ten films were produced in an year.He was hero for many years and later confined to elderly roles. He earned fame as Thikkurissi.
He was born in 1916 at Thikkurissi which is a serene beautiful village of Kanyakumari district(At that time Kanyakumari district  was part of Travancore state). His parents were Mangattu Govinda Pillai and Lekshmi Amma.At the age of 8 he wrote a poetry requesting his father to buy him a ball and put it in his father's pocket.Father when read the poem  was amazed about the child's talent and arranged a teacher to teach him Malayalam and Sanskrit language deeply. This training helped Thikkurissi a lot and he became  an expert in those languages. He could speak brilliantly well to please the audience. He earned fame as an eloquent speaker and a wonderful writer also. When he was seated in a conversation group he grabbed the attention of the whole group because he was able to mesmerize them with his words.
Due to his love towards drama stage he started working with professional drama troupes from an young age while his younger sister  L.Omana Kunjamma turned out to be the first woman Majistrate and later got   I.A.S. and became district collector.
Sukumaran Nair later formed his own drama troupe and his drama 'Sthree' was well accepted. He implemented dramatic changes also to the drama field.Till that time the dialogues were mostly used in poetry form  and the artists had to sing the versus  and act.So actors with singing talents could only come to the top.Thikkurissi used normal dialogues and  for singing songs playback singers were  utilized.(This method is followed now also)This change was well accepted by other troupes also immediately and he was credited for that. After several years of drama experience he entered film field by producing a film 'Sthree' which was the story of his earlier drama itself.Sukumaran Nair was in the lead role but the film was not a success.Next
year K&K productions made a film 'Jeevitha Nauka'  which was directed by R.Vembu.Thikkurissi was the hero and it was debut film of B.S.Saroja.The film was made in Malayalam and Tamil and dubbed to Telugu and Hindi. It was a  super duper hit during those days.
In 1952 two more films were released. In "Navalokam' Miss Kumari was the heroine and in the other ;Visappinte Vili' he co-starred with Prem Nazir who was also new to Malayalam film industry. In 1953 he wrote story,Screenplay, dialogues, lyrics, for a film 'Sario Thetto' and acted in the main role and directed it.
During that period  it was a record and for that great one man show he was much praised from all corners.
He was accepted as a genius and that respect was given to him by all film workers till his death on March 11, 1997.Thikkurissi directed films Nurse,Poojapushpam,Saraswathi,Chilamboli,Achante Bharya and Urvasi Bharathi. He scripted for films Sree Ayyappan,Muthalali,Aana Valarthiya Vanambadi etc.He wrote lyrics for Sthree,Palunku Pathram,Sariyo Thetto,Deva Sundari,Pooja Pushpam,Urvasi Bharathi and Balloon.
His lyrics were very beautiful like songs" Kar Koonthal kettilenthinu vasanathailam ninte var nettithadathil enthinu sindhoora thilakam, and" Niseedhini Niseedhini neela kadalasil nee kurichoru prema lekhathin aksharamalakal karmashi veenu kanneru veenu manju poyi sakhi manju poy".He was brilliant in writing parodies also. When hearing his lines of film song "Thulli thulli nadakkunna  kalli penne, kakka pulliyulla nin kavilil nulli nokkatte onnu nulli nokkatte" we feel that he should have concentrated  more on lyrics writing also to give us beautiful songs like them. What ever he wrote had a magical touch. In the Malayalam film industry he is respected and remembered as Producer,Director,Actor,Story writer,Script writer,Lyricist Etc.
Thikkurissi gave screen names to so many artists which proved lucky for them.Prem Nazir's real name was Abdul Khader,Bahadoor was Kunjali and so on. Jose Prakash,Kunjan,Prem Nawaz, Kuthiravattom Pappu,Director Priya Darshan etc were re- named by Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair.He had deep knowledge about many subjects. In his residence at Jawahar Nagar in Thiruvanathapuram he had his own library where so many books were in his possession which he used to read in passion. He was very sad during the last four years of his life due to the untimely death of his youngest daughter 'Kanakasree' (Who was an aspiring poetess) in a road accident. He used to wear saffron colour dress only during those period like a 'Sanyasi'
He got several awards  like
Padma Sree in 1973
Kerala State Best Actor award in 1973
National award for Best supporting actor in 1959

It was a  shocking news to all  Indians especially from Kerala,Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on December 6,1992
when they read in News Papers in the morning  that the very beautiful and attractive, innocent girl of just 21 years old who
got National award for best actress for the debut film itself died in an accident the previous night. It was the
news of Monisha who was an intellectual girl who was very talented in acting as well as dancing. She was actually concentrating in her studies and dancing and was preparing to  take acting as the main career when the disaster happened.
Monisha was born in Panniyankarta,Calicut in 1971.Her Father Narayanan Unni was doing leather business at Bangalore and her mother Sreedevi Unni is a noted dancer. They were settled in Bangalore.Monisha had her studies in Bangalore and had completed degree course. From childhood itself she was trained in Bharatanatyam and other classical style of dancing and she proved to be an expert in that field. She got several awards for dancing during school days and at college level also.Apart from that she was recipient of many precious  awards also for dancing.
Her first film 'Nakhakshatangal' which was written by 'Gyan Peet' holder M.T.Vasudevan Nair and directed by Hariharan was a super duper hit of 1986.The half of the credit should be given to M.T.Vasudevan Nair for the fantastic screen play.Thilakan,Kaviyoor Ponnamma,Vineeth,Jagannatha Varma,Kuthiravattom Pappu,Singer Jayachandran etc acted in that film which dealt with a teenage love theme.Monisha's role was as a servant in an Advocate's residence which she handled superbly well. The south Indian actor and well known dancer Vineeth was the hero of that film.Monisha was only 15 years old when she acted in that film and got National award.
Since she had to continue her studies she was appearing in films not frequently. When she acted in a Malayalam film  'Perunthachan', a historical film which was directed by Ajayan,( son of writer-Director Thoppil Bhasi, ) all critics appreciated the film and the role of Monisha who handled it precisely superb. It was a matured type character which an young girl could not
present reasonably expressive but Monisha was praised from all corners for her immense  talent.
Like that 'Kuruppinte Kanakkupusthakam' was a very good film  of Balachandra Menon in which she was in a good character.
She had acted in Tamil Movies and Kannada Movies also.
While acting in  a Malayalam film 'Cheppadividya'  Monisha and her mother took leave and  were going to Ernakulam to catch train to Bangalore. The car got in an accident at Chethala near Alapuzha at midnight. Her mother was also injured and was under treatment for several  months.Monisha had a dance program at Bangalore within a couple of days and they were in a hurry for the preparation  and practice.
In a Malayalam film 'Kamaladalam' in which Mohan Lal was the hero she had the role as a dancer. She was excellent  as that character which got much applause."Champakkulam Thachan' was a good movie in which 'Vineeth' was the hero and in that film south Indian beauty 'Rambha' also had an equal role.
Monisha's untimely departure is mourned by all film goers.
