Guru Dutt is a lucent  star in the lucid sky of Indian cinema.During the 50's he was engaged in diversified fields of film making as Writer,Producer,Choreographer,Actor and Director. He was an intelligent and very talented personality whose works were artistically superb. As a technician he utilized the sophisticated technologies available at that time effectively for perfection. Some lenses and filters which were used in Holly wood was introduced in his films  for the first time in India.Closeup shots and long shots were determined precisely well to convey the mood of the characters and particular scene to the audience.Light and shades were controlled accurately to visualize frames in a wonderful manner.
Even though black and white films were made during those days Guru Dutt films had significant characteristic quality of its own.His selection of stories was perfect and well suited for those time, the screenplay were excellent, technical quality the best, arrangement of the objects in scenes were beautiful, utilization of characters he did with artistic perfection so that the ultimate results were fantastic movies. His films are used as references today also by students of film Institutes and by new directors.During his time the Critics and spectators could not differentiate the technical qualities exhibited by him but in 70's and 80's when those films were re-released appreciation from the masses were visible in fully packed cinema houses.
Guru Dutt was born at  Mangalore of  Karnataka State in a Brahmin family. He had his school education at Calcutta since his parents were living there. After school studies he joined for a five year course at Indian Culture Center at Almora.Since he was well trained in all dance forms he started his film career as Choreographer.Afterwards he started acting in films. The metamorphosis from Choreographer to actor, Assistant Director and Director was rapid.
Guru Dutt was a genius and thinker who wrote short stories in English and other languages which was published in magazines. The story of the film 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam' was originally written in English and published in 'The Illustrated weekly of India'.He handled the lead role in some films  produced and directed by him self also. After the film Kagaz ke Phool which was a flop at Box Office he did not direct any more films.Pyasa and Kagaz ke phool are excellent films which gets admiration always..
He wore the coat of a Director for Dev Anand's  'Baazi in 1951.Some of his films are Jaal(52),Baaz(55) Pyaasa(57) Kagaz ke Phool(59).
His wife was Geeta Dutt who was a leading play back singer of Hindi Cinema. It was a love marriage. Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt  had some conflicts later on  which resulted in their divorce. The segregated condition from family and children was  unbearable for him and in his sorrows  alcohol was his aid and relief.By the high rate consumption of liquor he was found dead on his bed in the apartment where he lived.   That very talented genius person departed us in October 1964 when he was only  39 years old..
If Guru Dutt lived for long we could have expected many more superb films from that sagacious personality.

Meena Kumari was born on 1st August 1932 in Mumbai and her original name was Mahzabeen Bano. Her father was a musician and poet while her mother was a stage actress and dancer. So her talent was inherited by birth and she entered in to Hindi cinema as a child artist at the age of 7.But Meena Kumari's inner soul was not happy with that style of life but was longing to mingle and play with children of her age and to study at school. She had two elders also and the family was poor.As an earning member of the family soon to find the bread for the family turned out to be her burden. She handled mature roles from 1949 with the film 'Veer Ghatotkach'.From 1952 onwards she became heroine and  her acting skills was revealed which earned much fame and reputation.
She could handle all kind of roles alike and at ease, but earned the title 'Tragedy Queen' since she excelled very well  by performing the sorrowful women and expressing the grievances prevailing in the society.Almost all films except a few were in this category.Tears rolled down the cheeks of that beautiful lady in front of the movie camera in all studio sets.Story writers and screen play writers deliberately made characters which explored  and utilized her acting skills to the maximum. She was able to transform the pain and grief of her characters to her audience so that they also wept with her in cinema halls. She got 'Film Fare Best Actress Awards for 'Baiju Bawra'(1954) Parineeta(55) Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam(63) and Kaajal(1966).
Her personal life was but a failure. She married a film director who was an already married man by name "Kamal Amrohi' who was much elder to her. They had no children and it is said that Kamal Amrohi did not want her to deliver a child because of his own reasons which made her quite unhappy. She started consuming liquor after a film " Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam' which was produced by Guru Dutt in which her character proved to had astounding similarities to her own true life later on.That character had extra marital relationship with younger men which also turned to be a reality for her in true life.Meena Kumari got divorced in 1964 and consumption of liquor increased rapidly so that she became a liver patient soon.In 1968 she was taken to London and to Switzerland for treatment. The Doctors warned her not to touch alcohol afterwards when she got cured but after some months gap she started drinking again. In 1972 the inevitable tragedy happened at Bombay when she was only 39 years old.
Actor Dharmendra and Actor Director and Lyricist Gulzar were her close friends.Gulzar and Vinod Mehta wrote biography of Meena kumari and in the biography 'Meena Kumari' Gulzar  described the habit of that talented actress in those last years. After consuming excessive amount of liquor she would be sitting or lying on a sofa on the sets of the studio in an inert condition but when called upon for taking the scene, the transformation to that character happened within seconds and she acted fantastically well with normal movements and remembering all the dialogues also.
'Daera' was a film produced by Meena Kumari and her husband together in 1953 and they planned to produce another film  by name 'Pakeezah' later on.At the time of their divorce the film was only half finished..After 14 years only  the other half was taken and released  in 1972.After two months of its release Meena Kumari became seriously ill and she died. The film was a grand success at box office since there was an influx of audience to the cinema halls.
Meena kumari was a highly talented, beautiful and intellectual woman who craved for warm unconditional and affectionate love but she felt nobody loved her as she wished. In her loneliness which paved way to agony that filled as a dark cloud in her mind,  she found relief by writing down her feelings which drizzled from her inner soul and took the shape of poetry. She  was able to release the audio record of some of her poems sung by herself which the music was composed by 'Khayam'.After her death some other poems were published by Gulzar.
When the film critics appreciated very much for her role in 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam'  and  special congratulations received for the song sequence "Piya Aiso Jiya Mein" no body expected the true similarities and consequences later on.She is still remembered by her fans.
